Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Social Enterprise Ethiopia in collaboration with Wiz Kids Workshop has commenced Shield Ethiopia (SHIFOON ETHIOPIA) campaign with the presence of Her Excellency, FDRE Health Minister, Dr Lia Tadesse. The campaign aims to curb the spread of COVID-19 within the community by raising awareness on the importance of wearing homemade or locally produced face masks and helping local manufacturers to fill the demand-supply gap.
Studies show that Masks have a compounding effect in that they both protect an individual from transmitting and being exposed to infection. The impact of this could, conceivably, be a dramatic reduction of R0. If we are to assume masks are 80% effective in preventing spread on an individual basis, the overall risk-reduction in a single interaction between two people should be 96%. If we are to be conservative and assume that low compliance and mask-quality reduce individual risk by 50% instead of 80%, the overall risk reduction within a single interaction between two people is 75%.
In line, the aim of Shield Ethiopia (SHIFOON ETHIOPIA) is to raise public awareness about the importance of face masks and ensure the usage of face masks in more than 80% of the population. Similarly with curbing the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, Shield Ethiopia (SHIFOON ETHIOPIA) plans to encourage and drive demand for local manufacturers to offer affordable face masks to the community. Moreover, other than washing hands regularly and keeping physical distance, Shield Ethiopia calls the public to form a habit of always using face masks while in public.
